Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. – 1 John 2:15
There are a lot of things that we are told we should love. Of course, we know the common things such as loving our spouse, children, friends, and neighbor. It seems that love is a word that is used commonly throughout our world though as a means to force us into accepting things.
For example, many may say that we are to love in regards to matters of sin in this world. Perhaps it’s love for a political viewpoint or even love of a specific lifestyle. We are taught that we should love beauty and success. But that’s not the type of love that the scripture is teaching us about here.
The verse specifically says love not the world or things in the world. In other words, Christians need to realize that there is something far more important than this world and the things in this world.
A Christian’s love should be focused on Jesus Christ and the desire to see those around us love Him and serve him. All of the things that we are told we should love, while they may be important to the world, will not last forever. Spiritual things are eternal. What is the focus of your love?
