Be thankful for work, not looking for a way out

Be thankful for work, not looking for a way out
Share with others

For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. — 2 Thessalonians 3:10-11

It is really easy to have someone give you everything in your life. As Christians, we are experienced in having things given to us as Christ freely gave His life for us. But even in the matter of salvation, scripture tells us that we must ask for forgiveness. It takes action on our part to receive His gift.

The scripture here in Thessalonians talks specifically about someone working for what they receive. The scripture is clear, there is nothing wrong with helping someone when they are in need. But there should not be public support of someone if they refuse to do their part.

We live in a society that wants to be given things without the work though. So many people share experiences where employees have gone to their employers demanding things, without doing the work to receive them. There is strong neglect of the importance of work and doing your best.

Scripture tells us that we should do our work as if we are doing it for God and that it is important to work. If we do not have a job, our goal should be to find work to provide for our families. If we are fortunate enough to have a job, we should be thankful that God has blessed us with a job and the ability to provide for our families.

It can be challenging to be thankful for work amid all the challenges we may face. It can be tempting to take the easy way out and try to get things for free. God wants us to give our best in our work. So when the temptations and frustrations present, just remember that a job is a blessing from God.
