O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works. — Psalm 105:1-2
It is Thanksgiving Day in the US and there will be a lot of people that talk about being thankful. They will talk about being thankful for family, jobs, homes, children, possessions, and many other things. Being thankful is important, but there is one key detail about being thankful that is often overlooked.
On the surface, you may be thinking that I am meaning to be thankful to God for the things that we have been blessed with. That is certainly part of it. Most Christians, however, are thankful to God for the things that he has given. They are thankful for His blessings and they often say that in their Thankgiving Day prayers or meditation.
That is exactly what David says here in the statement “call upon his name.” It means to say specifically that God gave you the blessings that you have. It is extremely important that we recognize and make known to God that we are appreciative of His blessings. But that’s not what I am talking about in the missed detail.
The very next statement David makes is, “make known his deeds among the people.” He continues later on saying, “talk ye of all his wondrous works.” David says it is important to be thankful and it is important to be thankful to the source of our blessings. He specifically says to tell someone else about these blessings and make known the wondrous works of God.
This goes much further than simply being thankful. The idea that David suggests is to sing a song so that anyone around you will know what God has done for you. Tell them the things He has done for you in the past. Share with them what He is doing for you now. Make sure that everyone knows you are more than thankful, but specifically, that God is the source for all the blessings in life.
I am reminded of a children’s song and hymn that I heard so much growing up and perhaps it is worth singing today so that everyone can hear. The words are, “God is so good, God is so good, God is so good, He’s so good to me. God answers prayer, God answers prayer, God answers prayer, He’s so good to me. He cares for me, He cares for me. He cares for me, He’s so good to me. I love Him so, I love Him so, I love Him so, He’s so good to me.”
