And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? — Genesis 3:9
Not so long ago my son and I were walking through a store and he caught me off guard. We were looking for my wife and as we walked through the store he was playing like a kid often does with his hands over his eyes. He was looking for his mom. Suddenly, he wraps both hands around his mouth and shouts, “Momma, where are you?”
It got the attention of everyone around us. People were looking to see if this was someone they knew that was shouting for their mom. The workers were looking at us, as I politely explained to my son that yelling like that in a store was not polite. Not long after he did this, I was reminded of these words in the book of Genesis.
Just before these words, Adam and Eve had taken of the fruit at the suggestion of the serpent. They both realized they were naked and were sewing clothes of fig leaves and were hiding from God. They were ashamed of what they had done. Then came those words as God was looking for them, “where are you?” Just like my son’s words got the attention of those around us, the words of God grabbed the attention of Adam. He knew what he had done and was hiding purposefully.
Just like Adam, God is looking for many Christians in our world today. Many Christians have gone missing. They are missing from their daily walk with God. Many are missing from the work that God would want them to do. Instead, they have found themselves hiding amid the things of the world.
God is calling for Christians around the world, but where are we? Are we hiding, ashamed of where we are and what we have done? God wants us to be ready. He wants us to live a life of prayer, study God’s word, and be ready to be about His work when He calls. God is calling, where will He find you?
